Product Description
Join us for a trip back to the mid-1970s as Emery Gulash and his 16mm movie camera covers the north end of the Ann Arbor Railroad! Filmed primarily north of Clare, locations seen south of Clare include Mt. Pleasant, Bannister, Durand, and Dundee. From Clare north, we will visit Lake George, Temple, Boon, Yuma, Mesick, Thompsonville, Beulah, and Boat Landing at Elberta. Then we will board the Viking for a trip across Lake Michigan to see the Green Bay Western at Kewaunee, Wisconsin. At Kewaunee and Boat Landing, Alcos are in charge of yard work and boat loading. After the Viking is switched in Kewaunee, the C&O boat City of Midland 41 arrives. Following its departure, we will follow GBW RS-27 310 as it returns to Green Bay. Then back in Michigan, we will see the first signs of the Michigan Interstate Railroad...the Annies successor following the Conrail merger. And, as a special follow-up feature, the Viking 1 is shown on its last major sailing...being towed from Erie, PA to Menominee, Michigan in January 2003. Emerys movie footage is silent, but we have professionally added audio to enhance it, the great majority of which was recorded directly from the Ann Arbors GP35 fleet. Also, many scenes include the trains freight cars...a real treat to see this many years later!

Rock-solid, well-composed sequences show the 'Annie' mostly on the north end between Clare and Elberta, Michigan before 1976. Scenes abound of GP35's rolling through the Michigan countryside with fresh Penn Central and Burlington Northern boxcars. Ann Arbor's Lake Michigan carferry operations get extensive coverage at Elberta, on board AA's Viking, and at Kewaunee, Wisconsin, where we also see C&O's City of Midland 41 before following Green Bay & Western's Alco-powered boat train west. That's nice, but the best Alco sounds on this fine DVD come in a 2003 postscript in which a 251-powered tug hauls the dead Viking past Port Huron, Michigan."

Watching those GP35s and trains rock-n-roll bring back some very fond memories; I'm still amazed the Ann Arbor didn't have more derailments than they did. The boat footage was superb and I loved the additional GB&W footage at Kewaunee and Green Bay. I'm also pleased you included your footage of Viking 1 passing through Port Huron in the night.
